How To Iron Sheets: 7 Steps According to Liz Barbatelli

There’s nothing more satisfying and indulgent than slipping into a freshly made bed with crisp and cozy sheets. It all starts with selecting the highest-quality linens for your most intimate spaces, but it takes more to replicate the 5-star luxury hotel atmosphere than thread count alone. If you really want to impress your guests with this pristine and sumptuous look in the comfort of your own home, you will want to incorporate the process of properly shaping and ironing your bed sheets.

With the support of world-renowned Fine Linens Stylist, Liz Barbatelli, you can learn how to iron your bed sheets to create your ideal sanctuary of sleep. Liz’s knowledge and experience in advising clients to create a sumptuous, luxurious bed design with the finest-looking linens will make learning the art of ironing a pleasurable experience. Here’s how:

How to Best Prepare Your Space for Ironing

Before you just lay your linens on a flat, clean surface area to iron, you’ll want to prep your ironing board or table that you will be using to avoid any damage to your linens.

Make sure that your ironing board is covered in a durable fabric. You also may add a cotton or terry towel that can hold heat on top of the typical cover and create a better ironing surface. Make certain that the floor underneath and surrounding your ironing board is clean and free of dirt and dust. While it’s not necessary, you can also lay clean, old towels or sheets around the area you will be ironing. This way, if you accidentally drop your linens, they won’t get dirty or touch the floor directly.

How To Iron Sheets: 7 Steps According to Liz Barbatelli

7 Steps for Ironing Sheets

Step 1: Wash your linens. Then, gently dry or leave them damp to prep for ironing. As the spearhead of The Laundry at Linens Limited, Liz Barbatelli entrusts expert linens care specialists to provide clients with excellent care and simple advice. Here, they have compiled their best tips and advice on how to properly wash and care for your specialty linens.

Step 2: Sometimes your bed linens will still have wrinkles after they have been washed and fully dried. Before ironing, most items will require reshaping to regain their proper form. Reshape and lay flat on an ironing table.

Step 3: When it comes to ironing, it’s always easier to iron linens or clothes while they are still damp. If your sheets are fully dried, simply spray lightly with water to dampen them before you begin ironing. It is recommended to dampen your linens with a spray bottle and then ironing them with a dry iron. However, some people prefer to use a steam iron, as they can keep wetting the item as needed.

Step 4: Once you’ve rewet your linens and prepped your surface, you can begin ironing. Hold the bed sheet firmly, creating a little tension in the fabric. This will help to avoid creases and the sheet from slipping off the table.

If you do use a steam iron, you will need to empty the water every time you stop using it.  This will help avoid any brown or discolored water from leaking onto your linens. After putting fresh water in and heating your iron, engage the steam before using it to dispel any leftover old water.

Step 5: Carefully iron the wrinkles out of your linens, starting from the center and working your way out and along the seam.

Step 6: Don’t rush, take care not to crease the item as you iron across the sheet. If you are short on time and you have guests arriving early, set up the iron and ironing board before you take your washing in and iron your linens damp.

Step 7: When you’ve finished ironing, be sure to let the bed sheet cool before folding or placing it on the bed. Store in a cool, dark space.

Conclusion

Ironing is a skill that requires patience and gentle care, but one that yields worthy results. A freshly ironed bed sheet gives you or your guests something to look forward to at the end of each day and will preserve physical beauty and exquisite softness.
